ETHOS OF GENDER EQUALITY IN SARAJEVO

Oppression, exclusion and subordination of women is justified even today in the name of religion and God and every single step forward and discussion about these themes cause discomfort and fear. Fear of being recognized as a feminist, fear of losing the acquired position, fear one will not be desirable for marriage and partnership with the point of view that counteracts discrimination based on religion prevail. These themes and prevailing gender theories in Catholic and Islamic tradition were discussed at another seminar of ethos of gender equality organised by IMIC Centre, TPO Foundation and Youth Forum Mostar on February 25, 2017 in Sarajevo. The seminar is supported by Ecumenical Women's Initiative.

Zilka Spahić –Šiljak, PhD emphasized the importance of narratives' deconstruction that load characteristics of female and male character in the text of the Holy Qur'an because it produces marginalisation of a female subject and placing her role at the periphery of private life. Božana Katava, MA reminded us that, among other things, female activities are reduced to premises cleaning, organisation of social events and education and many women lack the counselling centre led by women because they do not feel comfortable to speak in front of men about some painful issues such as domestic violence.
